Boomerang

Boomerang is a community based alternative to suspension program for middle and high school students in Chapel Hill-Carrboro Schools.  Boomerang provides a supportive environment for students who are short term suspended, advocates for youth in the community, and provides resiliency based training to the community. Students participating in Boomerang complete a substance abuse assessment tool, take part in a strengths assessment process, have the opportunity to stay on pace with their school work, engage in skill building and information group sessions, and are provided the space to voice their goals to staff, parents/guardians and school representatives. Middle School Model United Nations

The Middle School Model UN program is a new program at the Chapel Hill - Carrboro YMCA that enables young people to engage in research and debate about countries around the world.  Throughout the year kids are put into groups of 2-3 students.  They choose a country, learn about the issues facing that country and prepare a debate, facts, and authentic clothing and food.  They prepare all this info for a 2 1/2 day conference in Black Mountain, NC in April.  The conference brings about 100 kids together to learn how to debate the issues that they are fighting for on behalf of their country.  To become involved, please contact Aubrey Vinson at 442-9622 or email at avinson@chcymca.org.
