Summer 2014 Air Conditioning Repairs

If you’ve been in the Y in the last couple of weeks, you’ve noticed the temperature in the building is warm.  We are beginning a major upgrade for to our Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning system this week that will resolve the issues and create better cooling and heating throughout the building for the foreseeable future.  The upgrade will be completed in phases and the timeline is as follows

June 10 – June 23 (Approximate)
Installation of a new HVAC unit for locker room areas and office in the Boomerang program space.

This process will involve a total redesign of the system and will include up to 4 days of shutting down all air circulation to the locker rooms, sauna, steam room, whirlpool and Boomerang.  It will be very warm on these days, so please plan accordingly.

Late June – Mid July (Approximate)
Installation of new HVAC units to the Group Exercise Studio and upstairs office area

This process will involve the installation of 2 new units to cool the upstairs area.  It includes the installation of a “Quick Recovery” air conditioning unit in the Group Exercise studio in order to handle the temperature changes needed for the multitude of classes.  This will also involve a complete shutdown of air circulation in the Group Exercise Studio and most likely the cancelation of classes for multiple days.  We do not know the exact dates of this install yet but will update you as we get more information.

We understand that air conditioning repair this time of year can be an inconvenience.  We are working hard to get the work done so you can continue to enjoy the YMCA.

KNOW YOUR LIMITS – Be safe and don’t overdo it while temperatures are high.
STAY HYDRATED – Drink plenty of water if you work out during warmer times.
TRY SOMETHING NEW – Check out the lap swim schedule and try a little cooler exercise.

Women on Weights

Women on Weights

Weight training offers incredible benefits for a woman’s muscular and skeletal development. But many women simply don’t know where to start. W.O.W is an introductory group weight training session led by our personal trainers. Learn proper technique, safety, etiquette and three levels of weight training and resistance exercises over this six week session. Each class will not exceed ten participants, so you will have personal attention while in a supportive group setting.

$75 for members
$100 for non-members
Ages: 16 & up

At the Y, we believe that all kids deserve the chance to discover who they are and what they can achieve. That’s why every summer our camps open up to create exciting, safe communities where young people can explore the outdoors, discover new experiences, and build self esteem and social and interpersonal skills. Through outdoor activities, arts programs, youth sports, service projects and more, kids in our community are learning about themselves and making new friends at Y Day Camp. And while they’re at it, they discover skills and values they can use for a lifetime; skills like teamwork, responsibility, respect and sharing.

At the Y, we believe that all kids deserve the opportunity to discover who they are and what they can achieve. And that’s what Y Afterschool is all about. We’re dedicated to creating a safe, nurturing environment for children to learn, grow and develop social skills. Our afterschool program serves all of the Chapel Hill – Carrboro City Schools from Kindergarten through 8th grade. It includes free time, structured physical activities and crafts, and supervised school work time.

Get a fast, effective, total body workout with our new TRX suspension training!

TRX Suspension straps use your body weight to provide resistance.  There are hundreds of moves that can be performed in TRX that hit every muscle group of the body.  This 6-week class features the latest in strength training technology.  Each small 4 participant class offers individual attention by a certified personal trainer.

Red Cross Lifeguard Certification

Red Cross Lifeguard Certification

The Y offers Lifeguard Certification by the American Red Cross.  Once participants successfully complete this training, they will be certified as Lifeguards and be ready to perform those duties.

The purpose of this course is to help participants achieve recertification in Lifeguard Training without having to take the full content course. This review course includes First Aid and CPR for the Professional Rescuer.

Teen Tune Up Swimming

Teen Tune Up Swimming

Teen Tune-up is for swimmers aged 11-15 who are interested in swimming to stay in shape.  The program will work on the technique of all 4 competitive strokes, as well as the appropriate starts and turns.  This program is perfect for summer league swimmers who want to get a little extra practice or high school swimmers who are planning to join their high school team in the winter. Registration begins August 20 for Members and September 3 for Non-Members.
