The statistics are startling. 1 in 10 children will be sexually abused before their 18th birthday. Children are victims in nearly 70% of all reported sexual assaults. In more than 90% of these cases, the abuser is someone the child knows and trusts.
But there’s good news too. The Chapel Hill – Carrboro YMCA has partnered with Darkness to Light, a nationally acclaimed non-profit, to bring its award-winning prevention program, Stewards of Children, to our community. Stewards of Children is a two-hour training designed to educate adults on how to recognize, prevent, and react responsibly to the reality of child sexual abuse, emphasizing child safety as every adult’s responsibility. Our goal is simple: to educate and prepare our community to deal with and prevent child sexual abuse. More than 6,000 adults in Orange, Durham, and Chatham County have joined the prevention movement.
The YMCA is able to provide Stewards of Children trainings free of charge thanks to grants awarded from the Oak Foundation and other community funders. Trainings are open to the public and may be of specific interest to youth sports organizations, coaches, camp counselors, teachers, schools, faith centers and other service organizations. Trainings facilitate discussion about the incidence and consequence of abuse and present information about child protection policies and mandates and prevention techniques. Stewards of Children workshops can be requested by any local group and the YMCA will host open community trainings on a monthly basis. Professional development contact hours are available for nurses, social workers, certified counselors, and childcare providers at an additional cost. For more information or to register, email email@example.com.

In recognition of Child Abuse Prevention Month- April 2014, the Y is auctioning off art pieces to benefit our D2L initiative. Wine & Design Wake Forest has donated 27 paintings by local professional artists to support Darkness to Light! Each painting is valued at $40, but bidding begins at just $5. All proceeds will help further the child sexual abuse prevention efforts in Orange, Durham, and Chatham counties, so here’s a fantastic way to support both the arts and youth protection in our community.
To bid on a piece, click on the painting of interest below to see recent bids, then follow the link to place your bid. The auction will be open until 5pm on Wed, Apr. 30th, so please bid as many times on as many paintings as you would like:
If links above do not work, you can bid via email by sending painting number and title along with your name, email address, and bid to email@example.com. Payments can be made via cash, credit, or check starting May 2nd and paintings must be picked up at the Chapel Hill-Carrboro YMCA main branch in Chapel Hill.
