The statistics are startling. 1 in 10 children will be sexually abused before their 18th birthday. Children are victims in nearly 70% of all reported sexual assaults. In more than 90% of these cases, the abuser is someone the child knows and trusts.
But there’s good news too. The Chapel Hill – Carrboro YMCA has partnered with Darkness to Light, a nationally acclaimed non-profit, to bring its award-winning prevention program, Stewards of Children, to our community.
Mission: Provide adults in Orange, Durham, and Chatham Counties with tools to prevent, recognize, and react responsibly to child sexual abuse.
Goal: Educate at least 5% of our community’s adult population in Stewards of Children, or 17,300 people. More than 7,000 adults in Orange, Durham, and Chatham County have already joined the prevention movement.
The YMCA is able to provide Stewards of Children trainings FREE of charge thanks to grants awarded from the Oak Foundation and other community funders. Trainings are open to any adult, but may be of specific interest to youth sports organizations, coaches, camp counselors, teachers, schools, faith centers and other service organizations. Stewards of Children is a national prevention training that teaches adults how to prevent, recognize, and react responsibly to child sexual abuse. Outcomes include increased awareness of the prevalence and consequences of child sexual abuse, new skills for adults to protect children, and commitment to community action.
Stewards of Children workshops can be requested by any local group and the YMCA will host open community trainings on a monthly basis. Professional development contact hours are available for social workers, certified counselors, and childcare providers for free as well.
