Jerry had always been active and healthy. From his time as a sprinter in college, he’d always been a picture of health. He also dedicated his life to helping others. From teaching in newly integrated schools in the South in the 60s to working in group homes and helping people with drug addictions, Jerry had always been there for his neighbors.
But he wasn’t quite sure where to go when he needed help. After beating a drug addiction himself, then falling into ill health, Jerry began to look for ways to rebuild a healthy life. And that’s where the Y came into the picture.
Jerry had spent time at the Y as a kid, and now as a senior, he came to the Chapel Hill Y looking for a place to begin to build a healthy life all over again. What he discovered was so much more. Through the Y’s Open Doors scholarship program, he was able to get a membership at a reduced rate, and begin the road to a healthier life.
“It’s so important in my life,” says Jerry. “But not just for the exercise. The Y is a community, and I’ve made real friends here. It’s as important to me that I get to see and talk with friends as it is to be able to exercise. And I’m so thankful for that.”
Through the Y’s We Build People Program, people every day are being supported right here in our community. From providing life saving swim lessons to creating memories in summer camp, the Y is changing lives every day. And you can help. By supporting the We Build People Campaign, you’re supporting your neighbors. And when you do that, it’s a better life for us all.
You can help us change lives too. To donate to our We Build People Campaign today, CLICK HERE or you can download our pledge card.
At the Y, we believe that all kids deserve the opportunity to discover who they are and what they can achieve. And that’s what Y Afterschool is all about. We’re dedicated to creating a safe, nurturing environment for children to learn, grow and develop social skills. Our afterschool program serves all of the Chapel Hill – Carrboro City Schools from Kindergarten through 8th grade. It includes free time, structured physical activities and crafts, and supervised school work time.

At the Y, we believe the ability to swim is a critical life skill for everyone. In swim lessons, we use a variety of fun methods to help kids overcome fears, build confidence in the water and develop skills that last a lifetime. Qualified instructors meet swimmers at their own level and celebrate all successes. By educating and partnering with swimmers, we’re determined to prevent drowning in our community.

Summer camp at the Y has been a traditional—and much anticipated—part of Summer Stiebel’s existence for more than half her life. The fifteen-year-old Chapel Hill girl recalls participating in the Y’s cheerleading camp through her elementary school years before “graduating” to experiences at Camp Clearwater and EDGE Teen Camp.
“I love the Y! The counselors taught us so much—canoeing, archery, soccer, swimming, etc.—and made everything so much fun,” Summer says. “I couldn’t wait to go to Y camp in the summertime!”
In addition to new and engaging activities, the Y introduced Summer to four core values—honesty, respect, responsibility and caring–that have been increasingly useful to her now that she is in high school. “Each week of camp centered on one of those values, and the activities taught us how to put them to practical use. As I’ve gotten older, those lessons have helped me navigate challenging situations in my own life, and for that I am grateful,” she says.
As a teenager, Summer has served as an assistant counselor. “Working at Camp Clearwater gives me an opportunity to give back to the Y in appreciation for everything it has done for me. When I work with the kids I think, ‘I used to be one of them,’ and it’s awesome to know I am helping to make a difference in their lives.”
At the Y, we believe the values and skills learned early on are vital building blocks for life. Because of the Y, more young people in our community are taking a greater interest in learning and making smarter life choices. At the Y, children and teens learn values and positive behaviors, and can explore their unique talents and interests, helping them realize their potential. That makes for confident kids today and contributing and engaged adults tomorrow.
